Main Idea: God and his kingdom are preeminent over (but do not negate) every human authority and government.  

1. Our King is not subject to any human authority or institution.

2. Earthly governments have a rightful but limited claim on citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven.

3. Our King has the ultimate (eternal) claim on our whole lives.

Questions to consider: 

·  How does Jesus’ response demonstrate his supremacy?  How should the transcendent authority of Christ shape our conversations about political issues and current events?

·  Are you more inclined to give too much or too little to the government? Are you resentful and dismissive, or placing too much hope in temporal leaders?

·  How are you rendering to God the things that are God’s?  What areas of your life are you tempted to hold back from him?
